Top Outdoor Furniture Trends for Summer 2021

Summer is almost upon us! There’s no better time than now to start upgrading your outdoor space in preparation for socially distanced gatherings, pool days, cookouts, and more.

Wondering where to begin when it comes to spiffing up your patio, deck, or other outdoor areas for the season? Read on for a few of this year’s biggest outdoor furniture trends.

1. Seamless Transitions Between Indoors and Out

The outdoor living trend has been underway for some time now. However, the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic really kicked it into gear. Experts are predicting that many of the changes necessitated by the pandemic are here to stay – including a shift towards more time spent in the great outdoors.

Given the amount of time you’ll be spending in your exterior spaces, it makes sense to invest as much thought and effort into their beauty and comfort as you put into your home’s interior. Gone are the days when you could make do with a simple picnic table and some benches. Instead, today’s indoor-outdoor rooms are lush and livable.

Interior designer Lisa Gilmore told The Zoe Report, “I think people are really seeing that they can treat their outdoor spaces with love and character, and they are excited to experiment. It’s no longer a place to just throw a random bistro table and chairs out and call it a day.”

The good news? There are many different types of outdoor furniture that offer a winning combination of elegance and durability. In addition to high-quality furniture, plan on integrating rugs, cushions, and other accessories with the potential to transform any deck or patio into a gorgeous and welcoming space.

2. Comfortable, Cozy, and Functional Furniture

Whether you envision your outdoor space as a private sanctuary or you’re planning to invite the whole neighborhood over, one element is essential if you want to keep the party going: comfortable seating. Deep upholstered seating, in particular, is having a major moment.

Speaking of comfortable and cozy, summer nights can get chilly. Plus, the season only lasts so long. Get the most out of your space by incorporating components like outdoor fireplaces that will help you utilize your outdoor space long after Labor Day has come and gone. Blythe Yost, co-founder and lead designer of online landscape company Tilly, told Veranda, “Heat lamps and fire pits are a great option to snuggle up to. There are so many types of fire pits that you can easily find a style that works well for your outdoors.”

On the functionality front, outdoor lighting can make gathering safer and more beautiful while also keeping the party going after dark. In addition to illuminating paths, outdoor dining rooms, and outdoor bar areas, lighting can also be used to showcase features, such as architectural or decorating details.

3. All Things Natural and Neutral

People have spent a lot of time cooped up indoors. In addition to wanting time outside, they’re also craving the simple pleasure of natural materials, such as wood, stone, ceramic, and wool. Texture artist Kate Blee told Homes & Gardens, “Natural materials offer a multi-sensory experience. They give us something unfathomable that chimes with our humanity…Often the least processed materials provoke the deepest responses.”

On a similar note, neutral and warm colors are also especially comforting right now. While an occasional pop of color here and there adds visual interest, neutral and warm hues facilitate a serene and tranquil environment for homeowners looking to create a backyard escape.
